Keeping Our Memory Alive
Dear Sir/Madam,

When Haiti makes the news here in the U.S., it is, most of the time, because of events that either sadden or shame most of us. Whether we acknowledge it or not, it is our past, as a nation, that nourishes our hopes in these dark hours. We know that beyond the Vodou drums, beyond the dismal statistics and the gory pictures of the victims of the latest repression is the people that had brought to the world the only successful slave rebellion in history. We shall overcome.

Now, what about our children growing up here in the U.S.? How can we ensure that they will assume their identity as Haitians, derive pride and self-confidence from it? Above all, how can we ensure that they will care about Haiti as we do?

The answer seems obvious. By teaching them our history. The Good News is that, NOW, there is a serious Haitian history book in English that could teach our children about our history. It was written just for our young Haitian-Americans: “In the Name of Liberty, A History of Haiti

“In the Name of Liberty, A History of Haiti
” is neither a mere list of dates and related events nor a translation of the Dorsainvil/F.I.C history manual. It is a modern Haitian history textbook (based on recent research in the field) that offers a seamless narrative covering the history of Haiti from pre-1492 to Dessalines’s assassination. After reading the book, your children will know more about that period of our history—including the Native-Haitians (“Indians”)—than any High-School student back home. The coverage is twice more extensive than the one found in the Dorsainvil/FIC “Histoire d’Haiti—Cours Supérieur. Read some excerpts or read the entire Table of Contents

Any adult can read it without getting bored. And that’s not all!!!

Maps: The book includes several maps of Haiti, specially customized to help understand the narrative and locate the events. As your children read the history of our country, they will also learn about its geography. See a sample of Maps.

Vignettes: All throughout the text, you will find different “vignettes” (boxed texts). They either provide additional information (“Who was Claire-Heureuse?”, “The Louisiana Purchase and its connection with the Haitian Revolution”) or go deeper into an issue (Where does our Haitian Creole come from?) without interfering with the narrative. See an example.

Epigraphs: Each Chapter is introduced by an epigraph taken from the works of some of our best poets and writers (an open window on our literature). See an Example
